About YakTrek

YakTrek began in 2013 when a group of weekend hikers from Boulder, Colorado, returned from their first Annapurna circuit determined to share what they had learned. We are a small expedition collective focused on responsible, slow-travel trekking through the Himalayan foothills, the Karakoram passes, and lesser-known routes across northern Bhutan.

Every itinerary we publish is tested in person by our lead guides — Tenzin, Pemba, and our route director Marcus Hale — and developed in partnership with village host families who receive a fixed share of every booking. We believe a good trek is unhurried: time to acclimatize properly, time to share tea in a teahouse, and time for the mountain to reveal itself on its schedule, not yours.

Whether you are a first-time high-altitude walker or a seasoned alpinist seeking a quieter ridgeline, YakTrek matches you to a route, a pace, and a guide that fits.

Stories from the Trail

★★★★★

"The pace was exactly right. Our guide Pemba slowed us down on the second day so we'd actually acclimatize, and by the time we hit the pass it felt earned, not endured."

"YakTrek's teahouse route through Langtang was the most honest travel experience I've had. We weren't tourists passing through — we were guests, briefly."

Daniel K.

"Booked the photography expedition with my dad for his 60th. Marcus pre-scouted every viewpoint. The Ama Dablam sunrise shot is on our living-room wall now."

Frequently Asked Questions

Our classic foothill routes are accessible to anyone comfortable walking 5–6 hours a day on uneven ground. High-pass crossings expect you to be able to do back-to-back days of walking with a daypack at altitude — typically that means 3–4 months of preparation including hill walks and cardio.
October–November and March–April are the prime windows: stable weather, clear ridgelines, and warmer teahouses. We run shoulder-season trips in late September and early May for travelers who prefer fewer fellow walkers on the trail.
Yes. Every booking includes TIMS / national-park entry permits, airport pickup, internal flights where needed (e.g., Lukla), and ground transfers between trailheads. International flights and travel insurance are arranged separately by you.
Every itinerary has a published Plan B — typically a lower alternate route or an extra rest day at a strong teahouse. Decisions are made by the lead guide based on direct conditions and a daily Met office check, never on a fixed schedule.
Absolutely — most travelers do. We provide a packing checklist 90 days before departure and rent down jackets, sleeping bags rated to −15°C, and trekking poles in Kathmandu for travelers who prefer not to fly with bulky gear.
